I wrote a poem about a teddy boy when I was fifteen. Wanna see it?
TEDDY BOY UNDER THE STARS
A teddy boy roaming the civic common
Cap in hand, a pound to the dozen
Waiting for news of his ailing pet rabbit
Resentful of the yob who broke in to stab it
Smoking and drinking to relieve his tension
Running around naked (which for now we won't mention)

A teddy boy wearing a cap?
And if he were naked (save for the cap), how would you know he was a teddy boy??
I really liked the story, though I have slight problems with the crossword clue. Should there have been a word defining the required answer, such as 'clear' or 'apparent', tagged onto the beginning of the clue?
And if it were the final unsolved word, surely there would be more than just a solitary 'B' to help?
But I'm being an obvious pedant. My fave post to date.
:)
I love that you're giving serious critique to the nonsensical output of a teenage boy. It's 'cap in hand' in the metaphorical, apologetic sense. And you can tell he's a teddy boy from his Alvin Stardust haircut.
I'm no crossword expert but yes, your suggested refinement to the clue might have been helpful to the old timer. Maybe that's why he couldn't get the answer. And I actually thought that having more than one letter would make his struggle less feasible - as if it were feasible anyway! I'm sure there are crosswords where answers have only one intersection. Well there were in 1959, it seems.
"I love that you're giving serious critique to the nonsensical output..."
Hehe. You can tell it's been a dull day!
